Vampire Movies

If you’ve been dying to be emotional and bite someone’s neck, you probably have seen “Twilight.” And while you might think the Cullens are the most popular vampires, this is far from the case. In fact, there have been many more vampires in movie and media than you might have realized. All of them have been able to suck in the audience (horrible pun intended), even if the vampire movie has been excruciatingly bad, as many of them are. Vampires just don’t get a good presence on the screen.

The Vampire Movies You Should See

Yes, this is up for debate, probably a lot of debate. When it comes to a ‘good’ vampire film, you will get different opinions on what good is and how it can be measured by anyone who isn’t really a vampire. But here are some of the movies that seem to make the best vampire movie lists again and again.

  • Let the Right One In (2008)
  • 30 Days of Night (2007)
  • Shadow of the Vampire (2000)
  • Blade (1998)
  • From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)
  • Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)
  • Near Dark (1987)
  • The Lost Boys (1987)
  • Fright Night (1985)
  • Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979)
  • The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967)
  • Dracula (1931)
  • Nosferatu (1922)

Yes, some of these movies are horribly done (here’s look at you Keanu), but at least you will get a better sense of what the vampire life is supposed to look like when you watch these movies and you will begin to understand what people think of vampires when they hear that world.

The Trouble with Vampires Today

Now, there’s nothing wrong with the Twihards and their obsession with the Twilight franchise. Nothing, absolutely nothing wrong with this, but really, these movies aren’t about vampires so much as they’re about what vampires are in the current societal mind. They’re about teenagers whining about being teenagers. How horribly angsty, perfect for those who have the money to spend on the movies, the music, and the t-shirts.

Vampires need to get a better presence on the screen because they’re pretty tough characters in terms of what they can do and what they can’t do. “Interview with a Vampire” makes the point that since vampires really can’t die easily, they will live on through the years, without ever being able to grow up or being able to stay with the ones they might love who are not vampires. Plus, the whole sucking blood out of people until they die is pretty hard to swallow.

Vampire movies will continue to be made as they’re something that we all think about, deep in the recesses of our minds. More about immortality than about sharp teeth, these vampires are working hard to teach us about what we value in the world and what we will do in order to get the things we want from the people around us.
